Black eyed peas curry…. Yummy and healthy

Black Eyed Beans is also known as lobia or chawalie. This is a basic recipe, easy and nutritious. To make it more filling you can also add 1 potato(chopped) while boiling the black eyed peas and serve it with Rotis or Steamed rice for a healthy and complete lunch or dinner.

1Wash the beans properly under running cold water till the water runs clear.

2In a pressure cooker boil 1 cup of beans to 3 cups of water for about 15-20 mints on a medium-low heat.

3Turn off the stove and let the pressure cooker go down by itself.Open the cover and check if the beans are cooked thoroughly ( if not add little water as per the requirement and cook for more 5 mints).

4Now in a pan heat 2-3 table spoons of oil and add a pinch of asafoetida powder, 1 tea spoon of cumin seeds, ginger garlic paste, 1 chopped green chilli and few curry leaves.

5Once they start to crackle and change its colour add the chopped onions and sauté them till it turns brown in colour.

6Now add the chopped tomato and spices like salt, turmeric powder, coriander powder,red chilli powder, as per the taste and mix them thoroughly till the oil starts to separate the onion- tomato paste.

7Transfer all the masala from the pan to the pressure cooker and mix it well with the already cooked black eyed peas gravy for 5-10 on a low heat without putting the cover on the cooker.

8Add 1 tea spoon of garam masala powder, 1 tea spoon of lime juice and sprinkle some fresh coriander leaves and serve them Hot with Steamed Rice or Parathas.


1 cup of black eyed peas- will yield 2-3 servings

1 tomato chopped

2 onions chopped

1 green chilli

1 tablespoon of ginger and garlic paste
